My best friend’s band, Big Daddy Love , had a gig at The Southern Cafe & Music Hall in Charlottesville, VA. He texted me that while I just happened to be at a job in MD. Hmmm. Doable. At wrap, I hoped in my car and headed south, plenty of time to make it before he went on. I made it moments before he took the stage! After his set, I caught a bit of the headliners, Yarn. The country(ish) band is based in Brooklyn and yet brings a beautifully soulful country/rock type of sound that doesn’t seems like it would come from a band out of the concrete jungle of NYC. Nothing like a last minute road trip, a huge surprise, AND getting turned on to a great band. Discovering new music and seeing people create onstage is what has always driven my music photography passion. I love after I’ve gotten to know a band, how I can read their tells onstage and know when a moment is coming, its exciting to be on the watch for those moments. A new band is an entirely different type of excitement, like a tennis match, eyes constantly watching to see when someone is going to make their move. It is like a dance and catching that moment where everything comes together and you can feel it in an image is my goal.
